Sing Out America, Then and Now
Brentwood, TN (Mansion Entertainment) June 30, 2010 – Since its establishment as a distinct genre in 1910 and throughout its evolution, Southern Gospel music has had its share of standout groups, programs and products in each of the various mediums of live performance, print, radio, television, cable, satellite, video and the age of the internet. One of the most popular Southern Gospel Music programs in the history of cable television was “Sing Out America”.
The concept of Country Music Television (CMT) co-founder, Glenn “Big Daddy” Daniels, “Sing Out America”, was created and Executive Produced by Daniels and began as an original half-hour music showcase making its debut among the daily programming of the CBN cable television network in 1981. Popular host personality, Bill Traylor, was the series original host and got his first opportunity as a host on SOA. The show was eventually moved to the ACTS and FamilyNet networks before being syndicated to television stations across the nation thus leading to its 13 year run. Original programs of ”Sing Out America” enjoyed a year-long revival in 2003-2004, airing on RFD-TV on DishNetwork and DirectTV.
During its tenure, SOA saw over 1,500 songs performed by such artists as The Florida Boys, The Blackwood Brothers, Gold City (with Ivan Parker), The Hoppers, The Hinsons (featuring Kenny Hinson), The McKameys, The Rusty Goodman Family (featuring Michael English), The Speer Family, Wendy Bagwell and the Sunlighters, The Cathedrals and many, many others. The show also featured artists from other Christian genres of music such as Sandi Patty, DeGarmo & Key and Petra.
For those who may have missed this significant part of Southern Gospel Music history, and for those that wish to relive it, the “Sing Out America” program is being revived with original host Bill Traylor. The new program will feature classic performance excerpts from SOA and as well as interviews from original guests to talk about “then” and “now".
